Catholics believe that no prayer goes unanswered. Sometimes God responds to our prayers in a different way than perhaps we'd hoped for, which you can be sure will be for our long term good and for the good of the person or people we prayed for.

God knows what is best for us and we have to trust that that is the case. Trust is the basis of any lasting relationship. God loves us and knows us better than we know ourselves. That means he will always reply to our prayers in the best possible way.

? ? ?

"There's no point in praying if you won't get the result you want."

"I believe God knows what is best for us all and so I have to have an element of trust in my relationship with him."

"I prayed I'd win the Lottery and I didn't – prayers don't work."

"I'm a Mum. I don't always give my kids what they ask for, but I'll always give them what they need if I can."

Diverse religions all agree that we have to accept that we won't necessarily get our prayers answered in the way we'd expect...but they are answered.

Could we miss prayers being answered?

We often need to be on the look out for seeing ways in which our prayers are answered. This means we need to be flexible and open minded.

It is likely that when we observe changes, they will be on a small scale rather than being an obvious 'miracle' (although these do happen - see our dedicated web page about miracles).

"Ask and it will be given to you".
The Bible, Matthew's Gospel, chapter 7, verse 7.

"If you do not pray, everything can disappoint you by going wrong. If you do pray, everything can still go wrong, but not in a way that will disappoint you."
Hubert van Zeller, Pan Dictionary of Religious Quotations, pg. 332.
