There is a real unity that exists between Jesus and his followers. Jesus uses the metaphor of a grapevine to explain the importance of every person within the Church. |

As a spiritual community, Catholics believe that they are connected together like cells in a body. They believe they work, as one, in the body of Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is in charge, he is at the head, and all his followers are united to him in a very special way as members of his Church. The word used to described this union is "mystical". |

What binds you intimately to the people with whom you live and work? |

 |
Think of a sport's team who have a captain at the helm for example, or of your own body and all the cells that make up who you are. You have one body, but there are millions of molecules that give it form. The Church is a bit like that. |
|
Existing together in this way, each
member of the Church unites to act in Jesus' name. So when
one cell or molecule acts, so does Jesus. You see, you can't
separate the molecule from the body or person. |
 |

Well, it's not as complicated as it sounds. In essence, we believe we are so supernaturally united to Jesus, that as a whole body the Church undertakes his work here on earth.
