Compared to even the most successful of books, the Bible tops the charts the world over. It has been read by millions and millions of people. Even though it is thousands of years old, it seems to have an enduring appeal. Many regard it as a supernatural treasure. |

The Bible needs interpretation. If we take it literally we can misunderstand its meaning. Often if we rely on our own interpretation of things we can go off on a tangent. So as with any historical book it has to be taken in historical context.
Catholics look to the Church, which has close to 2000 years of Bible reading experience, to help them understand this special book. This "reading experience" and lived experience of putting what the Bible says into practice is called "tradition". |

Catholics believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God; God is the author of the chapters and verses and books. He inspired men to write down his words over the centuries so as to teach the world about himself, and to express how much he loves us all.
It is a book that is a gift from God. It contains accounts of God's relationship with men and women, and explains his loving plan for them. |

Want To Go Deeper?
The Bishops of England and Wales, and of Scotland, have prepared a teaching document, The Gift of Scripture, in which the teaching of the Church about the Bible (the Holy Scriptures) is explained in detail. What the Catholic Church has to say about the Holy Scriptures builds on ancient insights as well as utilising modern understandings. This document is offered to all who value the 'gift of Scripture', so that we may be more richly nourished at 'the table of God's word'. |
