For most of us, our Mothers are the most loving influence in our lives. They carry us in their wombs, they nurture us, care for us and are always on our side. If we are ever in need we know that we can always count on 'Mum', and she will be waiting for us with open arms.

Vivien

Motherhood is a calling that presupposes a clear role. When a woman carries and gives birth to a child, an amazing bond is formed between them that can never be broken.

What are the qualities you treasure most about your Mother?

"It was the way she used to make apple pie. Such love went into that baking and we really enjoyed eating the fruits of her labour."

"She listens to me. That is the main thing. I never feel judged. She's just there and always has some words of wisdom for me."

"Even now, if I need anything, I know I just have to ask - she often seems to know what I need before I know it myself."

Your guide for this section is Vivien, she asked the same questions. She is a single mother, 30, and comes from Coventry. Click here to read her story.

That we have all had a human Mother goes without saying. We wouldn't be here if we didn't. But what about the reality of having a 'Spiritual Mother'?

Catholics believe that God has given them a spiritual Mother in the person of Mary, Mother of Jesus. They don't worship her, but just as they would with their human mother, they do seek her help in their lives.

Mary is believed to be unique in the history of mankind because she was born perfect. To use a technical term, she was born without Original Sin. That means that from the moment of her conception she was free from any desire to reject God, any desire to behave selfishly or without love.

Imagine living with the perfect woman!
