Icon of Jesus Christ

Seduced By God

This is a phrase which is repeated throughout the film, but what does it mean?

Falling in love is a remarkable experience where one’s life is totally turned upside down in a wonderful way. We are drawn to another person and in most instances, they to us. This love changes and grows over time; it matures.

We fall in love because of that person’s looks, yes, but on a deeper level, because of their personality, talents, sensitivities, sense of humour, because of the beauty of the whole person. We are drawn into an exclusive attentiveness to that other person.

Christians, and in a radical way, monks and nuns, are seduced by the love of God. It is an experience where one finds oneself unconditionally loved and understood at a very deep level. Christians are freely drawn to God. It is an experience which leads them to change their whole lives and, with joy, to try to share this pearl without price with others.

It is hard to articulate a profound and very deep experience. It’s hard to articulate what it is like to encounter unconditional love, but it’s something which the writers of the Bible tried to do. The source of this love and also forgiveness is Jesus Christ.

It’s this spiritual encounter which goes some way to explain why the monks in the film submit, in freedom, to a life of silence.
