What do Catholics think about abortion?
The underlying principle that the Catholic Church looks to as regards Abortion, and other areas, is the Commandment, "Thou shalt not kill." (Ex.20:13). Also in the Book of Exodus we find the command, "Do not cause the death of the innocent or upright." (Ex. 23:7) This extends to murder, genocide, euthanasia, wilful self-destruction, cloning and genetic-engineering. The Church has always proclaimed the dignity of each human person. All life is given by God and we are made in the image of God. We are not just a body made of flesh but have a soul; a share in the divine life of our Creator. This means that all life has to treated with love, care and respect.
The Church teaches that human life starts at conception. It is at this moment that human life with potential has been created. It is understood that many developing foetuses do not result in the birth of a child and the mother's body naturally rejects the foetus. However, the deliberate external intervention used to bring about the same outcome would be seen as unlawful. Anyone who undertakes such an abortion and so attacks innocent human life is acting contrary to the will of God.
The Church is well aware of the real situation in which some women find themselves and the despair that can sometimes come about with an unwanted pregnancy. It is also aware of her need for pastoral and physical care. For these reasons there are many initiatives that would support the girl or woman through her pregnancy, to the birth of the child and afterwards.
